What is a dream, what is reality? David Lynch’s enigmatic and nightmarish masterpiece about two women’s adventures in the dream city of Los Angeles earned Lynch the award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film tells the story of Betty (Naomi Watts), a young woman who dreams of a career as an actress. Betty has just moved to Los Angeles and finds a woman who has lost her memory in her aunt’s apartment. The woman, who calls herself Rita (Laura Harring), has been in an accident and made her way to a stranger’s apartment. Together, the women embark on a journey to discover Rita’s identity, while Betty tries to build a career in the city of her dreams.
The film began as a pilot for a television series, as Lynch hoped to repeat his success with Twin Peaks. However, the result was instead a renowned thriller drama—a dreamlike, enchanting, absurd classic that defies all definitions. In 2016, Mulholland Drive was voted the best film of the century in a BBC poll. The voters were 177 film experts from around the world.
